Former slaves were often given names of classical Greek figures: yet another way to de-personalize and humiliate slaves. Thus names like Julius Caesar, Pompey, etc. "Mungo" was an enslaved servant from Isaac Bickerstaff and Charles Dibdin's comic opera "The Padlock", 1768. The Duchess of Queensberry had a former slave named "Julius Soubise".
